How can manufacturers define the life of LED systems for general lighting?
The Lighting Research Center and the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST) program answer these questions, and more, in their "ASSIST Recommends: LED Life for General Lighting" publication, which has just been released.
It is recommended that LED systems be operated for 1,000 hours in a "seasoning period" at the rated current and voltage. Then, the system should be monitored while operating at its rated current for at least an additional 5,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C.
The lighting experts note that, as product performance improves in the future, the seasoning period and measurement period might be extended beyond the recommended total of 6,000 hours-the equivalent of two-thirds of a year.
In addition to detailing recommended methods for measuring LEDs and their systems, the publication provides sample data sheets for:
